Kalpa

Located on the Shimla-Kaza highway, the riverside town of Kalpa in Kinnaur district can be easily called a surprise destination. Situated on the banks of the Sutlej river, Kalpa seems to almost appear out of nowhere as it is well hidden behind a steep road, away from the direct view from the highway. Kalpa is where the pretty apple orchards are aplenty. When I say that, I mean there are apples growing everywhere! Not just a farm or two, but it has several kilometres long stretch of apples. And don’t think it’s just apple trees here, wait till you see the Kinner Kailash and Raldang Kailash views from Kalpa. It will instantaneously steal your heart.

Kalpa is an offbeat destination, perfect for those who are looking for some quiet time in the mountains, surrounded by nature and a very laid-back vibe. The town is for those who love to sit back, relax and rejuvenate. All this means only one thing – less foot traffic here.

And just as you start to wonder what else is there in Kalpa besides stunning views and feels, it throws in beautiful traditional Himachali architecture your way. Kalpa’s temples and Buddhist monasteries, they all showcase the finest of Himachali traditional architectural style. Most popular ones are Narayan-Nagini temple, made in a traditional Tibetan pagoda style of architecture, Hu Ba Lan Kar monastery with its ornate doors, and Sapni Fort, also showcasing traditional Himachali architecture with fine wood carvings. The more you explore Kalpa, the more treasures you will come across.
